Theme Song: "April Fools" - Rufus Wainwright
It's first thing Saturday morning when I hear it on the TV, "Coming Up Next on TV Guide... Harry Potter is DEAD!" My ears immediately perk up with excitement. Is that so wrong? Anywho, the reporter finishes with a quick "Just kidding." Curses, foiled again! With the exit of the HP franchise finally here, all I wanna do is put all bad memories of it behind me. Thus, my trip to the mall. Unfortunately, I'm not even safe there! After dodging sales racks filled to the rim with Deathly Hallows and weaving past obnoxious cardboard cut-outs, I finally reach my favorite store (in Marley, at least): Suncoast Movie Company. Safe, right?
HAH!!! Of all the rotten luck, the extremely geeky new salesman is pluggin' the hell outta that damn book. He follows me around the store and keeps mentioning it and with every "Potter!" I just can't suppress that involuntary wince. And judging by the four ENORMOUS stacks that literally hit the ceiling, I'm not the only one. After the third time, I finally lose the smile and unleash Smirk #3, the one that says, "Boy, you best back off 'cause I am in noooo mood!" Never fails.
A lot of you might ask: "James, how could you NOT love the Harry Potter series?" Well, let's just say I have one too many bad memories of it all: my cousin forced me to read the second book on a road trip (3 hours of my life I'll never get back); my junior year of high school, Amanda Panda and I had to act out scenes from the first book in front of a group of freshmen *cringe*; plus, that photo of Harry Potter as Equus... NOT remotely hot, y'all. Perhaps I'm biased on that last one, seeing as one my favorite celebs, Jude Law, played the same role over ten years ago.
Back to the mall. Much to my surprise, Mama proposes that we go see I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, a movie I've secretly been dying to watch but couldn't find a good excuse to go. And after watching it, I must say... it was WONDERFUL!! Contrary to some reviewers, it's not just a one-trick pony and offers a variety of slapstick, wit, and heartwarming moments. Being a big fan of Adam Sandler's, especially for his positive portrayal of a prominent gay couple in 2000's Big Daddy, I was optimistic that he wouldn't let me down... and he didn't!
I was also impressed by Kevin James's performance; I had never attempted to watch his Everybody Loves Raymond spin-off, King Of Queens, but he was extremely likable. Another great thing about the film is the cameo appearances by comedians like Nick Swardson (aka Terry on Reno 911!) and David Spade (from SNL & the Chris Farley films). Ironically, as an advocate, the one person I didn't need to see in the film was Lance Bass aka the no-talent succubus who has publicly stated that he neither wants to associate himself with the gay community nor act as a role model AND YET he wants to publish a book about being gay in Hollywood. Asshole! Anyway, my final verdict for Chuck & Larry is FOUR stars: Great acting, Excellent message about loyalty to and acceptance of one's friends, PLUS, it managed to keep everyone in the theater entertained (even with a 2-hour running time). That's right, nobody walked out in the middle, YE-AH!!
